James Hayes was born at Bootle on the 7th September 1896 and was baptised at St.Winifredís R.C. Church on the 13th September
 
He was the son of Martin Hayes and Ellen (nee Hinchey) who were married in the June quarter of 1880 at Glin, County Limerick, Ireland.

 1911 Census - 52 Southey Street, Bootle - Parentys Martin and Ellen Hayes with children Thomas, James, John and William. (Parents married 31 years with 6 children born and 4 alive)
 
A brief report on his death appeared in the Bootle Times, "Pri. J. Hayes KLR son of Mr & Mrs Hayes of 11 June Street, Bootle was seriously wounded on August 9th, part of his face being blown away."
 
His mother lived at 52 Southey Street, Bootle after the war.
