Joseph Alfred Armitage was the son of James Armitage and Mary Ann Armitage (nee Davies). He was born on the 11th August 1892 and baptised on the 31st July 1895 at St.Thomasís C.of E. Church, Seaforth.†
 
His sister Mary Rachel was born on the 16th July 1895 was baptised on the same day as Joseph.  
 
Their parents' address in 1895 was 27 Caernarvon Street and their father James was a Sailor as he was on his marriage certificate. Their parents were married on the 24th April 1888 at St.Thomasís C.of E. Church, Seaforth
 
1901 Census: 9 Henley Street, Seaforth - Mother, Mary A with William J, Joseph A, Mary R, John C and Albert R. 
 
1911 Census: 41 Lily Road, Litherland - Parents with William, Joseph, Charles, Albert, Walter and George - all children born Seaforth. His parents were married 23 years with 7 children born Ė 6 still alive in 1911.
 
Joseph Alfred was a Plasterer on his marriage certificate and 1911 census returns.  
Joseph was married to Mary Halladay, daughter of James Halladay, on 13th April 1914 at St Leonardís Church, Bootle. They had two children James A. who was born March quarter 1915 West Derby and Joseph W. born March quarter 1917 West Derby (both with maiden name of mother as Halliday) 
 
He enlisted at Bootle on the 5th August 1916 and was killed in action on the 19th September 1916.  
 
A report on his death appeared in the Bootle Times on the 13th October 1916. His photo appeared in the report and is reproduced here with the kind permission of the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo.

 
   Private Joseph Alfred Armitage (24) K.L.R. of 95 Moore Street, Bootle was killed in action on September 19th.He was only drafted to the front on August 26th and leaves a wife and one child, for whom deep sympathy is felt in their great loss
