H.M.S. Bulwark

At 7.50 am on the 26th November 1914 on the HMS Bulwark was completely destroyed by an internal explosion whilst anchored off Sheerness, Kent. Over 700 lives were lost in this disaster - a list of their names can be found at www.naval-history.net.

There were only sixteen survivors and, of these, seven eventually died of their injuries. One of the survivors was Norman Stroud, who survived the war. A report on his miraculous escape appeared in the Bootle Times on the 4th December 1914.

A BOOTLE "BULWARK" SURVIVOR

Three Escapes From Death.

Included in the list of those saved from H.M.S. Bulwark is the name of Able Seaman Norman Stroud, who resides in Bootle, where he was employed as a cranedriver by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board. When he rejoined the colours as a naval reservist he was sent on the Exmouth, but was afterwards transferred to the Bulwark.
This marks Stroud's third escape from almost certain death. Serving on the Royal Standard, thirteen years ago, he was standing with a live charge in his hand near a gun when it exploded with instantaneous fatal effects to a number of comrades. Some years later he was working a crane when the explosion occurred on the liner Haverford in a Liverpool dock. By some means he escaped, while men further away were killed. When the Bulwark disaster happened he was below having his breakfast, and he is at a loss to know how he escaped. Stroud, in a letter, states that his condition is not serious, but adds that he is "fed up with explosions."
