H.M.S. Champagne

H.M.S. Champagne was built in 1895 by Harland & Wolff as the S.S. Oropesa. She was owned by the Pacific Steam Navigation Company of Liverpool.

She was requisitioned by the Admiralty in November 1914 and was in service as an armed auxiliary cruiser. In 1915 she sank a German submarine.

In 1917 she was lent to the French navy and at that point she was renamed H.M.S. Champagne.

She retained her British crew and, according to wrecksite, either fifty-six or fifty-eight of these were lost when she was torpedoed in the Irish Sea on the 15th October 1917. uboat.net says, "Captain Brown considered the casualties to have been 5 officers and 53 men missing out of a complement of 305"

However, the cwgc lists only forty-seven lost. Of these, nineteen were from Merseyside. Only thirteen of the nineteen are commemorated on local memorials and there names are highlighted in the list below.

Another crewman, George Bennett of Devon died in the U.K. a few days before H.M.S. Champagne was lost and is buried in Devon.
