S.S. Drina

 

S.S. Drina was built by Harland & Wolff Ltd. at Belfast in 1913 as a passenger liner for the Elder Dempster Lines. At the time of her loss she was owned by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. Ltd. of London.
 
She was the first merchant ship to be requisitioned by the Admiralty for use as a hospital ship during the First World War, serving in this capacity from the 4th August 1914 to the 10th February 1916.
 
Master at Arms Frank Shergold of Salisbury, Walthamstow and Hampshire fell ill and died on the 24th November 1915 and was buried at Queensferry, Scotland.
 
Three nurses from the H.M.H.S.Drina died when H.M.S. Natal sank in the Cromarty Firth on the 30th December 1915 after an internal ammunition explosion. They had been attending a film party given by the Captain of the Natal.

Drina was released from military service as her refrigeration facilities were needed to transport foodstuffs. She was en route from Buenos Aires to Liverpool with passengers and general cargo when was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine uc-65 off the coast of Wales on St.David's Day, 1st March 1917,
 
'Deaths at Sea' also records the name of another Merseyside man who died whilst serving aboard the Drina during the war period but who is not officially war dead.
Steward Stewart William Chamberlain of 12 Rivington Street, Everton was born at Wavertree. He died at sea of Lithiasis (kidney or gall stones) at Las Palmas on the 7th January 1917, aged 32.
