H.M.S. Eden

H.M.S. Eden was an River Class (later E-class) Destroyer, built for the Royal Navy 1902-04 by Hawthorn Leslie & Co. at Hebburn-on-Tyne.

She spent most of her career based at Harwich with the East Coast Destroyer Flotilla, the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla and the 5th Destroyer Flotilla.[wikipedia].

In January 1910 she broke loose from her moorings at Dover in bad weather and and ran aground under the East Cliff.

A photograph of the semi-submerged H.M.S. Eden can be seen at www.gracesguide.co.uk. She was refloated and repaired in a matter of days.

From September 1914, she served as part of the Dover Patrol which patrolled and defended the Dover Barrage.

On 17th June 1916 H.M.S. Eden was escorting the French troop carrier, H.M.T. France (a former trans-Atlantic ocean liner), across the English Channel to Le Havre.

When the latter's steering gear failed the vessels collided and Eden was cut in two by the much larger France. Eden's forward half sank immediately but her after half remained afloat and was towed into Le Havre. 42 crewmen lost their lives as a result of the collision

The National Archives holds records of a court martial of the surviving crew [Ref ADM 1/8463/179]
