Sinking of S.S. Hollington & M.F.A. Purdy

S.S. Hollington was a British steamer, built in 1912 by Northumberland Shipbuilding Co Ltd at Newcastle.

At the time of her loss she was owned by F S Holland of London

She was sunk by the German submarine U-95 off the Faroe Islands on the 2nd June 1917 whilst on a voyage from Liverpool to White Sea. Her cargo was the property of the Imperial Russian Government. The National Archives holds records of a proposal to salvage her cargo dated 1954. [Ref: FO 371/111740]

Between 1970 & 1972 a Captain Ross recovered 680 tons of tin from the the wreck of the Hollington. According to Capt Ross she was also carrying small arms and ammunition for delivery to the Tsar of Russia. [Cornwall's History of the World]

naval-history.net lists the royal navy casualties of the Hollington and goes on to say that four men were lost on the "Purdy, mercantile fleet auxiliary, type not known, described as accompanying SS Hollington. However, Purdy does not appear in loss lists. These casualties may have been serving on Hollington"

'Deaths at Sea' also records the name of another local man who died when the Hollington was sunk but whose name is not listed by the cwgc.
Seaman Michael Doyle of 5 Canning Place, Liverpool was born at Skibbereen, Ireland and was 37 at the time of his death.
