H.M.S. Laurentic

The White Star liner H.M.S. Laurentic was built by Harland and Wolff at Belfast and launched in 1908. She entered service in 1909 on the Liverpool-Canada route.

In the pre-War period she was involved in the apprehension of Doctor Crippen [see wikipedia]

When the war broke out she was immediately requisitioned to transport Canadian troops to Europe. She was then converted into an armed merchant cruiser, engaged in this service from the 31st October 1914.

Her log books for the period November 1914 to December 1916 (except May to July 1915) can be seen at naval-history.net. They detail her voyages during this period - West coast of Africa, East Indies Station, China Station, North America  and West Indies Station - which encompassed almost the entire globe.

In December 1916 her Commander, John Mathias, died when he fractured his skull attempting to rescue men trapped by a fire in one of the ship's holds.

Three other men died whilst serving aboard the Laurentic:
James Edward Forster of Wales and London died of illness at Hong Kong on the 27th June 1916 and is buried at Happy Valley Cemetery, Hong Kong. The Laurentic had left Hong Kong on the 5th June.
William John Marshall of London died of from heart failure at sea on the 7th September 1916 and is commemorated on the Chatham Memorial.
Alexander King Melaney of Liverpool died at New Somerset Hospital, Cape Town on the 22nd September 1916 and is buried at Maitland Cemetery, Cape Town. The Laurentic had left Cape Town on the 23rd July.
In addition, Jabez William King of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment died aboard the Laurentic on the 9th August 1916 en route for Newfoundland for discharge.

On the 25th January 1917 she struck a mine off Lough Swilly, County Donegal, Ireland and sank with the loss of 347 crewmen. There were 121 survivors.

A pdf of Laurentic's casualties (the 347 lost in the sinking as well as the five above named men) can be downloaded at www.laurentic.com, a site primarily concerned with the recovery of the gold bullion which went down with the ship.
