S.S. Palmella

S.S. Palmella was a British cargo ship.

She was built in 1913 by Ramage & Ferguson Ltd. of Leith, Scotland for Ellerman Lines of Liverpool

She was en route from Liverpool to Lisbon when she was torpedoed off the coast of Wales on the 22nd August 1918 by German submarine ub-92.

wrecksite.eu gives the number of casualties as twenty-eight but the CWGC only give the names of twenty-seven crewmen who perished. 'Deaths at Sea' lists one further crewman who for some reason is not commemorated by the cwgc [see below].

'Deaths at Sea' also records the names of two Merseyside men who died whilst serving aboard the Palmella during the war period but who is not officially war dead.
Boatswain John Hodgson of 9 Cedardale Road, Walton was born at Liverpool. He was drowned at Oporto on the 23rd March 1915, aged 47.
